The world is out there for us to explore. Never mind the hype of “throngs of people are leaving California”, let’s concentrate on going “somewhere” and coming back to our beautiful State.

We gather, as SIRS, at our monthly meeting to enjoy lunch, speakers and camaraderie.  We banter about the skills of tennis, golf, biking, bocce, poker, finance and many other activities. A lot of us take vacations.  So, let’s see what we need to do to take care of our wanderlust.
First, we have to satisfy our Branch Membership. So, someone has to make plans keeping in mind everyone’s interests.   Your travel chairmen look to find a few interesting places that will work. This is presented by an announcement and brochure to build interest. It takes a couple of months and involves setting dates, allocating funds, making reservations, filling out forms and reading up about the destination.  It may include making sure we have the necessary documentation (passport).

The trip has to satisfy each participant and not everyone has the same expectation.
Setting up the itinerary can be a little agonizing.  Experiencing the trip is not a problem as long as it meets the intellectual needs of the members and friends.  Depending upon the destination (domestic or international), getting there and back becomes part of the fun (the airline, transfers, weather).  And, then there are the memories: we tend to recount all the good things (standing on a glacier, visiting the Gulbenkian museum) and forget the aches, pains, bugs and pickpockets.

So, SIRS, we are now offering a third great trip, a cruise with Crystal Serenity from Quebec City to New York City on Sept. 28 to Oct. 6, 2020.  All the information has been shared in previous meetings and a brochure describes the details, ie dates, times, ports, costs. If you need more information, call Tan or our new vice chairman, Ron Knibbs, or directly to our travel agent Ilene at (925) 837-8742 - Alamo World Travel.  This trip is also being sponsored by three other branches! Now obviously, the other two travel ventures were not subscribed: Snake River and Portugal, but we will do our best to find one that works for all of us. And, please give us your feedback regarding where you might like to travel.  Travel Group: Tan Matosian 925 786-3960

128 Travel Blog- September 2019

(YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK)

With the kids back in school and before the cold of the winter months sets in, September is an ideal month to visit/revisit this historic park. The drive time is a little over 2 ½ hours and if you have a “senior pass” the entrance to the park is free. If not, the entrance fee is $35.00 per car.

This is the perfect time to see the start of the fall color season as the Aspens put on their color show. Plan to stay over night, or more, to experience all the park has to offer. There is so much to see and do, but I do recommend the following:
  • For starters, the Valley Floor Bus Tour – a 2 ½ hour tour of the Yosemite Valley. This departs from the Yosemite Valley Lodge and the highlights include Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, El Capitan, Tunnel View, and Bridal Veil Falls. Weather permitting this is an open-air tour. Call 209‑372-1240 for exact time and availability.
  • The Ahwahnee Hotel and Dining Room. Call ahead for both hotel and dining reservations. There are 99 rooms and 24 cottages starting at $376 a night. A less expensive option is the Yosemite Valley Lodge.
  • The Valley Visitor Center for movies of the valley history, souvenirs and general information on the activities at the park.
  • A drive to Glacier Point for incredible views of Half Dome and the valley below.
  • There are bike rentals, hiking and much more to see and do.
