Tour of Restored Nike Missile Site - Friday, June 9th

Join fellow Sirs on Friday, June 9th for a free tour of the restored Nike missile site located in the Marin Headlands. This is the most fully restored missile site in the country. During the tense Cold War times from 1953 to 1979 the US Army built over 300 of these sites in the US to act as our last line of defense against Soviet bombers that could have dropped H-bombs after avoiding Air Force interceptor jets. A group of volunteers has worked to preserve the site as it was when it was operational to remind visitors of the physical and psychological effects of the Cold War on Americans.
Our tour will start at 12:30pm and last about an hour. One of the people involved with the site will be our docent. The tour is free and open to all SIRS and guests. We are limited to 30 participants so register here if interested in attending.
Since we are at the Marin Headlands we are planning to have lunch together for those who wish, after which it might be fun to do some hiking in the area before heading home.
Contact Dan Mahoney by email (d2dmahoney@sbcglobal.net) or phone (925-788-9557) if you have questions.

Second TCHO Chocolate Factory Tour and Tasting - Friday, June 23rd

To all SIR Chocolate lovers and guests,
Come join us on an interesting and tasty docent led tour of the well-known TCHO Chocolate Factory in Berkeley on June 23rd at 11:00am. The original TCHO Factory once only found on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, has now expanded to a new facility in Berkeley. On the tour you will learn how TCHO has collaborated with farmers worldwide from West Africa, Haiti, the Caribbean to Madagascar to find new ways to create better cacao for better chocolate. They have installed 10 Flavor Labs around the world allowing their farmer partners to make chocolate from their own beans in order to understand how to improve their quality. TCHO Chocolate is used by some of the best chefs around the nation, and is used by Blue Bottle Coffee in their mochas and by Salt & Straw in their vegan mint chocolate chip ice cream. You will be given a factory tour to see how they go from "bean-to-bar" and, in the end, be treated to the various flavors they produce.
The tour is about 1 hour and is limited to 20 participants at a cost of $15 per person. Cash will be collected on the day of the tour.
Register here if interested in attending.

Tour of California State Capitol and Museum - Friday, July 28th

Come join us on a private tour of California's State Capitol and Museum in Sacramento on Friday, July 28th. Visiting California's seat of government is a memorable experience, enhanced by a docent-led tour of the historic State Capitol. After the reopening of the restored California Capitol in 1982, California State Parks began offering tours of both the historic State Capitol building and Capitol Park. Tours include interpretive information on the historic offices, legislative chambers and artwork, in addition to the Capitol's unique history and architecture. If the Assembly or State Senate is in session, we will be able to observe our lawmakers from the gallery area.
The tour will start at 10:30am from the North/South rotunda and last 1 hour. The tour is free and limited to 35 participants. Parking is available at the Capitol Garage across the street from the Capitol. After the tour, for those interested, lunch can be reserved at the Rio City Cafe in Old Sacramento along the banks of the Sacramento River.
